A high-voltage stringing operation is a system, not a single machine. Pullers, tensioners and stringing blocks are the three pillars, and they only perform well when matched to one another and supported by the right accessories. This guide explains what each part does and how the pieces fit together into one working spread.

The Three Core Machines

  • Hydraulic puller — generates the forward pulling force that hauls the pilot rope and then the conductor through the blocks.
  • Hydraulic tensioner — applies controlled back-tension at the drum end so the conductor rides correctly without sagging to the ground.
  • Stringing blocks — suspended from each tower to carry and guide the conductor, protecting it from abrasion and controlling its path.

The puller provides the energy, the tensioner provides the stability, and the blocks define the route. Change one and you must re-check the others, because the load path is continuous from drum to anchor.

The Supporting Accessories

A complete overhead line stringing spread also includes:

Accessory Function
Drum stands Support and brake the conductor and pilot rope drums during payout
Anti-twisting pilot wire rope Leads the conductor through the blocks while resisting twist
Running boards Carry multiple conductors together through the blocks in bundle stringing
Clamps Grip the conductor or rope for pulling, anchoring and tensioning
Swivel joints Connect rope, running board and conductor while allowing rotation

Each of these seems minor until it fails. A swivel joint that cannot rotate, or a running board that is too small for the bundle, can stall an entire day's pull.

Matching Them Together

Matching means more than picking parts of similar size. The puller's continuous rating, the tensioner's channel count and the blocks' rated conductor diameter must all suit the same conductor and section. For twin-bundle conductor, for example, a 90 kN puller pairs with a two-channel tensioner and bundle-rated stringing blocks. For four-bundle EHV work, a 150–220 kN puller pairs with a four-channel tensioner and larger blocks, all linked by correctly rated pilot rope, running boards, clamps and swivel joints.

Plan the Whole Spread

Because these components are interdependent, the most reliable approach is to plan the spread as a unit: define the conductor and bundle, size the puller and tensioner to match, then select blocks and accessories to complete the chain. Choosing every element from one supplier makes that matching guarantee explicit and avoids the mismatches that cause unstable tension and conductor damage on site.
